Professor Patrick Salter is a researcher in the Department of Engineering Science at the University of Oxford, specialising in photonic engineering. His work focuses on using ultrashort-pulse (femtosecond) laser fabrication techniques to create three-dimensional functional devices inside transparent media, aided by adaptive optics to correct aberrations and improve precision. He is particularly interested in fabricating and controlling structures in synthetic diamond for quantum technologies, liquid-crystal photonics, and microscope calibration. He is also a founder and director of the spinout company Opsydia, which aims to translate these laser manufacturing techniques into scalable industrial systems.
